Shopify gives you three options and a hard variant ceiling. Products that need engraving, a colour per component, a file upload or a conditional add-on hit that wall immediately. Variantly is what happens after it.
Shopify supports three option names and a fixed number of variant combinations. A configurable product blows through that at the second or third option, and the usual workaround is to split it into ten products nobody can find.
Variantly adds option sets that live alongside the variant structure rather than multiplying it. The product stays one product; the choices ride on the line item.
Configuration on the product page, priced correctly, arriving intact on the order.
Applied by product, collection or tag, so one set covers a whole category rather than being rebuilt per product.
Options that appear, hide or change based on earlier answers, so a customer never sees a choice that does not apply to them.
An add-on that shows the right price on the product page and the wrong one at checkout is worse than no add-on. Charges are applied as real line-item adjustments so the number the customer agreed to is the number they pay.
An engraving nobody in the warehouse can see is a refund. Selections are attached to the line item and carried through to the order and the documents your team actually reads.
Text with character limits, number ranges, dates, colour swatches, image swatches and file uploads with type and size rules.
Which options get chosen, which combinations sell, and which options nobody has ever picked.
Fields, conditions, price adjustments and validation, built once in the admin.
By product, collection or tag, so a new product in that category picks it up without anyone remembering to.
Options render in the theme, conditions apply live, and the price updates as they choose.
Selections travel on the line item to the order, the packing slip and any export your fulfilment uses.
Pricing that diverges at checkout, and configuration that never reaches the people packing the box.
Many option apps display an add-on charge on the product page and then rely on a draft order or a manual adjustment to actually collect it. That gap is where support tickets and chargebacks live.
The customer chose a font, an engraving and a gift box. If that information stops at the order confirmation screen, somebody ships the wrong thing.

Variantly is a Shopify product options app that lets you add unlimited custom options and values to any product, past the three-option and hundred-variant ceiling Shopify enforces. Options render on the product page, can carry their own prices, and travel with the order to fulfilment.
Shopify variants multiply — three options with ten values each is a thousand combinations, and Shopify stops you long before that. Variantly options do not multiply: they attach to the line item instead of generating variants, so a product with fifteen option groups is still one product with one inventory record.
More than fifteen option types, including colour and image swatches, buttons, dropdowns, checkboxes, text fields with character limits, number inputs, dates and file uploads. A single product can combine several — a size selector, a colour swatch row and a free-text engraving field on the same page.
Yes. Conditional logic shows or hides an option depending on earlier answers, so a customer never sees a choice that does not apply to what they are building. Engraving options only appear once they have chosen an engravable material, and irrelevant fields stay out of the way.
Yes. Any option can carry a price — gift wrapping at $5, a handwritten note at $3, express handling, an extended warranty — and each selection adds to the order total as the customer ticks it. Paid add-ons attach to any option, which is the simplest way to raise average order value without a separate upsell app.
You set per-option surcharges — a walnut upgrade at +$120, a matte finish at +$40 — or a formula such as width multiplied by a per-centimetre rate. The total recalculates live as the customer configures, so the price on the button is always the price of what they have actually built. No manual variants and no arithmetic on your side.
Yes. Charges are applied as real line-item adjustments rather than displayed labels, so the number is correct in the cart drawer, the cart page and at checkout. Apps that show a charge on the product page and collect it later through a draft order are where the support tickets and chargebacks come from.
Yes. A template library covers apparel, jewellery, food and drink, furniture, electronics and cosmetics, each with a curated option set you can apply in one click and then adjust. It is the fastest route from install to a configurable product without building every field yourself.
Options render as a theme app block with design presets that pick up your existing type, colour and spacing, so they match on the first load. It works on any theme with no code and no developer — an older theme that predates Online Store 2.0 needs a small manual install, which we will do for you.
Yes. Option sets are applied by product, collection or tag rather than rebuilt product by product, so a new item added to that collection picks up the right options on its own. One set can cover an entire category.
Inventory tracks the underlying variant. Options that do not change what gets picked off the shelf — an engraving, a gift note — do not affect stock. Options that genuinely change the item should stay as Shopify variants, and we will tell you on a call which of yours are which.
Yes. Selections sit on the line item, not in an order note, so they appear on the order and the packing slip and travel in fulfilment exports and 3PL feeds. An engraving that stops at the confirmation screen is a refund waiting to happen.
Yes, with rules on file type and size, and the uploaded file is retrievable from the order — which is what a print, engraving or custom-artwork product actually needs. Files are deleted on uninstall.
Yes. Reporting shows which options are chosen, which combinations sell together, and which options nobody has ever picked — useful for pruning a configurator that has quietly grown too long, and for pricing the add-ons that people take anyway.
There is a free plan covering theme design presets, ready-made templates, conditional logic, add-on charges and the full set of option types. Pro is $9.99 a month and Advanced is $19.99 a month, each about 17% cheaper paid annually at $99.90 and $199.90 a year.
Both. The free plan runs indefinitely with no usage charge, and the paid plans each come with a 7-day free trial so you can build a real configurator on a real product before committing.
Option configurations are kept for as long as the app is installed, and customer file uploads are deleted on uninstall. Orders already placed keep their selections in Shopify, because that data belongs to the order rather than to the app.
Book a demo and bring the product you cannot model in Shopify variants. We will build the option set for it on the call, priced and conditional, and you can see where it lands on the order.
